"That's why manolo blahniks are called limousine shoes. "Next, semmelhack shows off a pair of 19thcentury sioux moccasins.Exquisite beadwork covers the soles. The limousine principle applies here, too, except that the wealth proclaimed was horse wealth. The beaded soles telegraphed a sioux variation on a theme of upmanship:I don't have to walk.I can ride.Furthermore, you who aren't on a horse can see from the soles of my moccasins just how well off i am. Fastforward to diana vreeland, the vogue editor, who kept the soles of her shoes polished to a perfect sheen, the implication being that her shoes were not for anything as pedestrian as walking. It was fashionspeak for i don't have to pound the pavement.Driver, come here. In an apartment on the upper east side of manhattan, nancy knox opens her closet to reveal boxes and boxes of shoes by jimmy choo, patrick cox, christian louboutin, gucci, jp tod's, manolo blahnik, philippe model, issey miyake, maud frizon, but the cr de la cr the ne plus ultra ultra of her collection is a pair of roger vivier heels bought 20 years ago on madison avenue. They are crimson suede with brass commashaped heels that christian louboutin uk ratatattat like the report of a firing squad as she crosses the parquet floor of her apartment. "Devil shoes"She calls them, and you can imagine the dark, leering glances of men and a whiff of brimstone. What is it about shoes? She reaches for an answer. "Make you feel good?Better than sex? " The question persists.Joan rivers aside("Does fashion matter?Always not quite as much after death,"She cheapchritiauboutin said), fashion is frivolous. Yet, it is not. "Should we be silent and not speak, our raiment.Would [betray] what life we have led,"Shakespeare wrote. And so it is with shoes. Joanne heaney, thirtysomething winner of a shoeaholic contest run by a canadian chain of shoe stores, lives in toronto and carries photographs of her favorite shoes in her wallet. "I have about 200 pairs,"She says. "My fancy shoes are in my closet.Summer shoes are in another room.Winter shoes are in the basement. "Why shoes? They fit if you gain or lose weight. They make me feel pretty. They make me feel sexy. They're a great antidepressant.I don't have a pet or a boyfriend.I have my shoes. " Shoes are armor us from the flinty surface of the moon, the searing sand of desert, the urban grime of city asphalt.Shoes also reveal our vulnerability just the weakness of vanity, but the easily wounded nature of our souls.

Beautiful island not as british as you might think All i know is i just got back from my first trip and, other than the fact that they drive on the left side of the road and have a few red phone booths scattered about and a marks and spencer(Painted soft lemon yellow), I never felt I was in British territory. I certainly saw signs of bermudian customs.I spotted four or five gentlemen in downtown hamilton with bermuda shorts and a jacket and tie and those extremely silly long socks that go up to the bottom of the kneecap.I wouldn't wear the getup to save my life, but hats off to bermuda men who celebrate their country's own style. I also saw lots of pink buses and pink golf carts and pink flowers and a tiny bit of pinkishlooking sand on the beaches, which are mostly long and glorious and significantly underexposed in my opinion.I also had fun with some of the most marvelous people i've met anywhere. It must be something to do with living on an island or in a semitropical place, but i've never gone wrong with an island cab driver anywhere in the world. In jamaica last year, i got to singing"The harder they come"With a local driver who was a big jimmy cliff fan. This time, i met the delightful irving butterfield on day one and then had a tour of the hamilton area from the equally charming larry rogers. Rogers showed me where the rich folks live out potts bay road and also where the"Average"Bermudian folks live, with their herbalonlinestore rainbowcoloured houses and limestone roofs that collect rainwater and never need replacing even after hundreds of years. "Bermuda is the good, the bad and the ugly,"Rogers told me. "It's almost all good, with a little bit of bad. "Pause. "And i'm ugly. " My last morning i got a ride to the airport from the fairmont southampton and my driver volunteered to show me around the sumptuous midocean club and the rosewood tucker's point resort. It seemed everyone on the island knew his name. He must have beeped his horn at 20 or 30 people on the half hour drive, and just as many cheery toots came back his way. "Morning, mr.Nesbitt,"The bellman at the rosewood said as we pulled up.He was, of course, dressed in bermuda shorts and long socks and also sported a pith helmet. The area of hamilton historically called"Back of town" (Some marketing types are trying to switch to"Uptown"), you'll find shops such as Dub City records and a branch of the terrific Jamaica Grill. Shawn thomas at jamaica grill insists they make the best jerk chicken on the island and that it's good as anyplace in jamaica. It wasn't quite cooked when i went in, so i opted for excellent rice and peas and brownstewed chicken with some of the spicy pepper sauce they'll soon have available for purchase. When i stopped at a small liquor store in historic st.George's for some ginger beer and a bottle of famous bermuda gosling's black rum so i could make the legendary drink of bermuda, the dark and stormy, i was in line behind five or six locals all chatting at full bore in the local, thick patois with the woman behind the counter. She spotted me and slipped into her soft, britishbermuda accent and asked what i wanted before slipping back into local lingo. Not that the geography is near as dramatic, or the socioeconomic differences as vast to the average tourist, but in my three days in bermuda i felt more like i was in jamaica than anything like britain. I thought maybe i'd need to dress up a bit my first night out.I'd booked a table at the waterside wahoo bistro and patio in st.George, a charming village on the far eastern tip of the island, which has survived almost all attempts to turn it into a club medstyle destination.I put on a nice shirt and some long pants, only to see the folks at the next table dressed in up tennis clothes, fresh off a sweaty game on a humid day streaked with showers. An older couple nearby was dressed nicely, but others were in shorts and golf shirts. In downtown hamilton the next night, folks at flanagan's pub were dressed the same way a crowd would be in summer in toronto. They were nicely outfitted at the pickled onion, but that's only because it's an afterwork jointthink upscale earl's for local biz types. The final night of my stay i had a table at the fabled waterlot inn, part of the fairmont southampton. It's known to be one of the top restaurants on an island with more than a few, and i wanted to fit in. I asked the concierge if i needed a sports jacket and he looked at me like i was nuts. "Just pants, ralph lauren t shirt a collared shirt and dress shoes or something similar,"He said. I got there and folks were in jeans and casual shirts with collars and very casual shoes. Not sandals and shorts or tshirts that said"I survived the bermuda triangle,"But not ralph lauren jackets and slacks, either. So do yourself a favour. If you go to bermuda, ditch the jacket. All i got for my trouble is what now looks like a wrinkledup blue rag and a looming bill for pressing at my local dry cleaner.
